What does Fair Trade Mean?
Fair trade is a term that refers to products where fair prices are paid to producers in developing countries. Fair trade is a core value of Liz Alig. Not only do we insure that our seamstresses have fair and ethical work conditions and wages, we also give back to further the development and skills training of women in their communities. All of Liz Alig products are produced by our partnerships with organizations who empower women-owned business, teach job skills to low income communities, and encourage economic growth in developing countries.
Are you Fair Trade Certified?
Liz Alig is a member of the Fair Trade Federation, a well respected organization that thoroughly inspects the practices of its members.
What does Recycled Fashion Mean?
Many of Liz Alig products are made from recycled fabrics meaning we use textiles that had a previous life as a garment or remnant fabric from factories. Using recycled fabric allows us to help prevent wasted textiles by giving them new life.
Where do You Get Your Recycled Fabrics?
Liz Alig sources recycled fabrics in a variety of ways - most of it comes from bulk second hand clothing stores or the equivilant open air market in developing countries. Also, we use remnants and dead stock fabric from factories. There is a huge amount of second hand clothing that is shipped to developing countries when we are finished with it in the West. This both encourages their economic growth and reduces the amount of shipping that the raw materials take before they are made into your Liz Alig garment.
We have also learned how to be creative with our sourcing of recycled materials - we recycle things like: flour sacks from Ghana, ikat fabrics from Guatemala, and excess fabrics from factories in El Salvador and Cambodia.
What other Types of Fabrics do you use?
Liz Alig also partners with producers that use organic cotton, 100% cotton, hand woven silk, cotton, wool and banana fibers.
Are Garments Made from Recycled Fabrics One of a Kind?
Most of the garments that we make out of recycled materials are not one of a kind. We recycle things that we know we can get enough of to make a very similar item, for example grey t-shirts, black sweaters, and kaki pants.
Other garments from recycled silk, sweaters, and button down shirts are more one of a kind. The fabric colors will vary, but the design and spirit of the garment will stay the same. We think this is something special about using recycled materials - you can have a garmet that no one else has.
What should I know about Buying from the Recycled Collection?
Because these products are constructed from a variety of t-shirts, shades may vary slightly from garment to garment. The pictures show the color schemes that are used for each season, but the shades will differ slightly.

Who is Liz?
Liz Alig was named for the founders first and middle name; however, this is not actually the name she goes by. We like to think of the name as the kind of person who wears our clothing...women who love fashion and care about things like social justice, recycling, and are excited about clothing that has a story behind it.
